I remember being little and wanting to do certain things or go certain places. I would plead my case before my mom or dad constantly until I heard what I wanted to hear. Sometimes it would be something like this. “If you get your closet cleaned out and your room straightened up, then we’ll go.” That’s all I needed to hear! I was then motivated to tackle these undesirable tasks because the payoff was certainly worth it. I, being the persistent child I was, would often remind my parents that “they promised” and I was counting on it. I was borderline annoying. I kept reminding them of their word to me. There was no way they could’ve forgotten. We had an agreement and I was not about to let them forget it.
“So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.” (Matthew 7:11 NLT) I think we, as God’s children, forget our position in life. We try to make things happen. We try to carry the tough load without asking for help. We don’t want to bother God with our issues. Doesn’t He have enough to deal with? This is wrong thinking! Just because we are grown adults does not mean that we are not His children. He is concerned about everything that concerns us. His written Word to us is a book of His promises to us. Unlike a “contract with our earthly parents”, His Word is based on who He is and not on our performance. We don’t have to do anything to earn a “reward”. If Jesus is your Lord, you simply remind Him of His Word. Keep in mind, it’s not like He’s forgotten. He wants to know that you, as his child, rely on Him. You’re not looking at the world’s way of doing things. You are counting on Him! “Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” (Ephesians 2:9 NLT) We belong to Jesus because we believe in Him. This gives us open access to The Father and all of His promises.
Let’s look at a practical example. Let’s take a single mom who has children to feed and clothe. She’s working at a mediocre job and barely getting by. She needs new tires on her car. She’s anxious about how she’s going to pay for this or how it’s going to happen. She goes over and over in her human mind trying to make this work. It won’t in the natural. But God is supernatural. His ways are not our ways. His Word says, “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19 NKJV) That’s it! That’s the answer! She talks to Jesus and reminds Him of His promise to supply all of her needs because she belongs to Him. Now the situation is in more capable hands. She doesn’t have to be anxiety ridden. Does The Lord tell her every detail of how this is going to work? More than likely, no. But can she believe that her needs will be met? Yes. She takes her eyes off the mountain and puts them on The Mountain Mover! If we put our eyes on Jesus, He just makes it work. I don’t understand it. I just know it to be so. I’ve seen Him move too many times in my life not to acknowledge His mighty power! “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” (Psalms 46:1 NLT) This is His promise to His children.
How can we know that God will keep His promises? “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” (Numbers 23:19 NLT) This is your guarantee. We believe Him by faith. The faith we have is not even our own. He’s given us that too! We are only designed to live one way. That is, relying on Jesus day by day. Everything we can come up with in our frail minds only leads to disappointment. He IS our answer! Talk to Him about your circumstances. He wants to walk with you through them. He loves to hear his children remind Him of His promises!
