It can be ninety degrees outside and if the wind is blowing, you still feel refreshed. There’s just something about riding in a car with the top down and feeling that freedom of the wind and sun pouncing on you. It revives the senses. It’s an amazing experience. You don’t have to be going anywhere in particular, you’re just going! A cool breeze on an early fall evening reminds you to bring a light jacket and snuggle up with a cup of coffee. It’s comforting. We can’t see the wind, but we can certainly see the effects of it. The leaves on trees obey it. It tells them how to bounce and sway. People clothe themselves according to what the wind is doing. Families evacuate their homes during hurricane season because of the strength of the wind. Though invisible, it’s a mighty force that everything and everyone on earth obeys.
The Bible tells us this about The Lord. “For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.” (Romans 1:20 NLT) God is invisible to the naked eye but oh how He directs us! If He weren’t in the picture, we’d just be a bunch of useless matter floating around. We’re so much more than that! This world was created by The Eternal Artist to have meaning and purpose. We have the ability to love because He Is Love. He’s the protecting, still small voice that urges us to do things and to not do things for our safety. He’s above our understanding, yet the best friend we could ever have. People “see” Him moving in His children’s lives and His goodness draws them to Him also. He blows into every situation in our lives just like the wind. He comes from any direction when His people call. “As soon as I pray, you answer me; you encourage me by giving me strength.” (Psalms 138:3 NLT)
Sometimes the wind is soft and quiet. These are the times that you sit still in God’s presence and just relax. Other times He stirs up hurricane force winds in your life to push you into situations that may not be your idea. But, this God we love knows what He’s doing. Time is often of the essence. There’s an example in the Bible where believers were gathered together in a room waiting for God’s direction. “Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.” (Acts of the Apostles 2:2 NLT) At this moment, the world changed forever. He prompted these people to get out and proclaim The Gospel message to a searching world. God, like the wind, can hold back or roar with mighty power.
You may find yourself in a life circumstance that you had no intention of being in. The “wind” could have blown you into this arena slowly but surely without you even realizing it. But here you are. God has a purpose and a plan. Just like we can’t figure out where the wind comes from or where it’s going, so is it with The Lord. “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” (Isaiah 55:8 NLT) This pretty much sums up your walk with the Lord. Just when you think you figured out what He’s doing, the opposite happens. Just like the Bible tells us to be ready in season and out of season, you have to be sensitive to where the wind blows.
