I am directionally challenged. Thank God for the GPS devices. You just plug in the address and it tells you turn by turn how to get where you’re going. It’s great. Take for instance a wedding venue. You know the town but you’re not exactly sure of the street names. This is where one of those systems comes in handy. You pull in, see cars that belong to your friends and know you’re at the right place. Easy enough. But what if you don’t have an address? How do we really know where we’re going in life? Are we just “going” or do we have a destination? What is the destination? What does your forever look like? Actually, you really can’t answer that question if you’re human. We don’t know if our next breath will even come, much less ten years from now. We need a supernatural GPS system. Only God knows where you are and how to get you to where He wants you to be. He’s the One with the Master plan.
“When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:8-9 NLT) This is interesting. Up until this point, sin had not clouded the vision of the couple. They always walked with God. Now, they saw things differently and were afraid and ashamed. God asked the man where he was. Do you really think for one moment that Almighty God didn’t know where Adam was? Of course He knew. Geographically he was in the same place he always was. All he knew was the safety of the garden. I think The Lord was asking a much deeper question. I think The Lord was asking Adam, “Where are you spiritually?” The Lord knew what happened. He knew the serpent deceived them. He knew the couple had been disconnected from the true path. They took a very wrong turn and God was confronting them. The Lord knew the couple desperately needed His help to find their way, but they had to own it. They were in dire need of a reroute.
What about you? If Jesus called to you today and asked “where are you?”, what would be your answer? Tough question, but so worth taking a look at. Are you tracking safely with Him or have you taken a wrong turn somewhere? No judgment here. It happens to all of us. This is how we learn. When life keeps getting tougher and tougher, sometimes you have to ask yourself “where am I?” It’s vitally important to take inventory of your surroundings, your friends, family members etc. Everyone and everything you’re around has a positive or negative effect on you. People and situations are pulling you closer to Jesus or they’re pushing you away. For you to make it to your ultimate destination, which is being with Him, you have to make a conscious decision to do whatever it takes to stay on the right road with Him. “But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.” (Matthew 7:14 NLT) The reason this road is difficult is because we’re so easily swayed and distracted. This world pulls us in every direction. We have to deliberately seek God’s direction for our lives. We have to stay built up in His Word and talk with Him daily. We’re always going to get direction from something. Make sure it’s the One who designed you for His purposes. There’s safety in His plans for you.
“There is a way which seems right to a man and appears straight before him, But its end is the way of death.” (Proverbs 14:12 AMP) This is definitely one of those verses that makes you take inventory. “Seems” right and “is” right are two very different ways to do life. Ask Jesus to guide you. He wants to do this for you. If you’ve lost your way and are on an unfamiliar path that seems scary, call out to Him. He will rescue you no matter what. But first you have to answer the question, “Where are you?”
