God’s Word is not just words written on pages. Yes, it contains creation, history, science and every other topic we could ever talk about, but it also contains something very special. If you’re not careful, you could literally miss the forest for the trees! On the pages of His infallible Word lie His PROMISES made to you! That’s right. There are so many specific truths that He has given you to make it through this foreign land. He knew things would be hard. He did not leave us unequipped. This very Bible we hold in our hands is none other than life’s handbook for God’s people. It’s our defense against anything that rises up against us. It’s our comfort in the storm. It’s our rest for weariness. It’s our weapon against the devil himself. We have it all! But the question is – Do you know what you have?

The enemy knows what you possess in your arsenal. He knows it well. In fact, Jesus, Himself used the very scriptures we have today to put the devil on the run. He was setting an example for us. But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (‭Matthew‬ ‭4‬:‭4‬ NLT) This scripture provides a twofold insight. Number 1, we see Jesus use the scripture against the devil. The scripture is our “sword of the Spirit”. It is our offensive weapon against the enemy’s attacks. Number 2, we learn in this passage that the body lives off of food and our spirits live off of the Word of God. “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (‭James‬ ‭4‬:‭7‬ NKJV) So, we’re being told here to submit ourselves to God’s mighty authority and resist the devil. The way to resist him is through God’s Word. We speak it out and he has to obey. God is all powerful. Everything in heaven and earth has to obey the Word. We typically remember to feed our bodies. Don’t skimp on feeding your spirit. This is the very power God has given us.

Another noteworthy promise for God’s children that brings much comfort is the fact that not only do we have God’s Word to use in times of trouble, we have God Himself. “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” (‭Isaiah‬ ‭41‬:‭10‬ NLT) Wow! That’s awesome!! He’s with me. He’s going to give me strength to get through and He’s going to hold me up through the Lord, Jesus Christ. That’s right. Jesus is the Father’s victorious right hand. “Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.” (‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭34‬ NLT) Not only is Jesus seated at God’s right hand, He is pleading for us! You know His requests are granted. No need to worry. Jesus has got this!

These are just a couple of examples of how God‘s Word works for us. But what if you don’t know the Word? You don’t know what you have. It’s like a present sitting under the Christmas tree from last year that’s never been opened. Do yourself a favor, and take time to get in His Word. Open up that gift! It is full of rich glorious promises just for you. The words on the pages have the power to totally transform your way of thinking. They will change your life for the better. Yes, it will take a little time. But it will be so worth it! When the enemy comes around with the lies, you can say “It is written….”. You won’t be cowering down under fear anymore. Your spirit will be strong and full of the Word of Truth! You’ll be able to take on anything because of the words Jesus has taught you!! What wonderful promises are just sitting there waiting to be used!
