We’ve probably all made choices that were not stellar if we’re being honest. A lot of times, people will try to warn us with a statement that sounds something like this. “I don’t know if I’d do that or not. It sounds like a slippery slope to me.” They don’t actually mean that we’re going down a mudslide into a river with class 5 rapids. The implication is if you choose that, consequences will most likely follow. Do we listen to wisdom? Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. That’s the hard part.
We all have territories in our lives that are “slippery slopes”. Mine may not be yours and vice versa. The important thing to know is what your danger zones are. For instance, if you’re a diabetic trying to get the sugar levels in your body under control, the bakery might not be the place for you to visit. I’ve heard it said that if you hang around the creek bank long enough, you’re likely to slip in. Having said that, this is where we have to rely on The Holy Spirit to rise up in us and show us the way out of temptation. ”If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.“ (1 Corinthians 10:12-13 NLT) The first part of this scripture is such a key verse. We can get confident in ourselves and think we’re stronger than we really are.
This is the segway into a very serious topic. We are sometimes blinded to our danger zones. God is trying to lead us away from them or out of them. The devil is trying to lure you into them. He wants to destroy everything that God loves. That, my friend, includes you. He will try to arrange things to cause you to end up on a slippery slope. He’ll convince you that “blank” is not so bad and you can handle it. It will look appealing and you will be certain that you won’t fall for it this time. That person that affects you so negatively has probably “changed”. It’s okay to hang out. You won’t buy things you don’t need and can’t afford but this shop is just too cute not to go in. I’ll go and sit at the bar but I’ll just have water. I just want to see my buddies. He apologized for hurting me. I know he really loves me. You get the idea. Try to see how the enemy is setting you up for failure. Don’t listen to him! He’s a liar! Jesus said, ”….for he is a liar and the father of lies.“ (John 8:44 NLT)
If you want to protect your very life, know your weaknesses. We have a very real enemy out there that wants to wreak havoc in your life. He knows your weaknesses and will prey on them. Stay in tune with The Lord. This will cause you to walk on solid ground. It will keep you safe and you won’t find yourself sliding down a slippery slope.
